Racism continues to rear its unsightly head!

If we’re going to call a spade a spade, it’s time to recognize that Black people are continuing to be mistreated in various aspects from employment to something as elementary as everyday shopping.

To the latter, there were various reviews over time of Black folks dealing with discrimination and being racially profiled while shopping. Unfortunately, there may be another incident to handle.

In a viral Twitter video, a Black couple, who happens to be new homeowners, used to be accused of shoplifting at a Bed, Bath & Beyond location. And of direction, social media users need the employees' heads on a platter. Here’s the rundown.

Shopping while Black! On June 19, 2023, Attorney Ben Crump @attorneycrump shared a video of a Black couple accused of shoplifting at a Bed, Bath & Beyond location in Toledo, Ohio. Attorney Crump obtained the video from Lamar Richards @lamarrichards_, who used to be accused of stealing along his husband.

“A Black couple says an worker at a Bed, Bath, and Beyond in Toledo, Ohio, called the police on them for allegedly having 'too many excessive price tag items' in their shopping cart. They deserve solutions for this humiliating revel in,” the tweet reads.

As the video begins, you can pay attention one of the lads asking an worker about being accused of shoplifting.

As the video persisted, the shopper shared that the police officer asked the couple in the event that they paid. Then, the employee shared that the call used to be made since they'd “giant purchase pieces.”

“I mean, I don’t care. If there are big purchase pieces or that kind of factor, there’s normally a query. We simply want to be sure,” the worker shared.

The client mentioned that while he understands their policy, he is that the police had been known as. The employee then mentioned that they “name the police at all times and that they have got their backs.”

“Because you concept three folks were shoplifting, why?” the patron requested.

As the video persisted, one of the employees will also be heard saying that “they’re no longer going to be able to unravel this and that she doesn’t know what the couple needs them to say.”

She implied that the call wasn't made since the males are Black and she or he doesn't care about pores and skin color, however since that they had “excessive price ticket items” this is the situation they’re in.

The man identified that multiple customers have “high price ticket items” however the police weren't known as on them. Not to mention, he mentioned that the excessive ticket item in query, which used to be a Dyson vacuum, was once taken from the couple and positioned on the sign up. So clearly, there's more to the tale.

The police then shared that since his section in the call is over, the couple must bitch to company.

The man requested if the employee described the alleged shoplifters and he showed and mentioned he was once informed there were “two Black men.”

Interestingly, the officer shared that he understood the couple’s frustration with the location.

“Can you name them back up here please so I will get their names? Thank you. That’s all I would like. And I will be able to take it up with company. I’m mindful of what I will do.”

Twitter users want felony motion to be taken against the store and workers.

One of essentially the most gut-wrenching issues to care for is to be accused of shoplifting as a Black individual — especially whilst you’ve accomplished no such factor. Unfortunately, some retailer workers have prejudices against Black folks and other racial groups that causes them to believe the worst.

That mentioned, people are hopeful that Attorney Crump, who is understood for representing Black people who were suffering from the whole lot from discrimination to homicide, will take the right action to make certain that Bed, Bath & Beyond and the workers catch up on their disgusting mistake.

One thing is for certain and two things are for sure; the fact that Attorney Crump has shared the video footage shows that he will ensure that the couple gets answers for this experience. SMH.

Let us imagine the label "Suspect of shoplifting" is applied to every customer by company's policy.
The label should disappear WHEN the "suspect" paid for what he has.

The sad thing about this is that this situation could have escalated when no crime occurred. This is just another example of the dangers that come with shopping while Black and dare we say, existing while Black.

Shame on those employees.

Bed Bath & Beyond shared that they "don't tolerate discrimination of any type."

It's no secret that retailers and brands have to ensure that they're on the right side when it comes to addressing issues with discrimination and racism. And since the video of Lamar and his husband shopping continues to circulate online, it was only a matter of time before Bed, Bath & beyond made an official statement.

As expected, the company exclusively told Distractify that there are taking the appropriate measures to investigate the situation.

"At Bed Bath & Beyond Inc., we take issues of this nature very seriously and don't tolerate discrimination of any sort," a representative told us. "We are deeply involved about the reported incident and are actively looking into the subject, as we do with any incidents described that are inconsistent with our insurance policies and procedures."
